What is patina? Why does leather become more beautiful over time?
A new leather product is not in its finest state; it reaches its finest state through use. This transformation is called patina.
What happens?
Vegetable-tanned leather darkens with sunlight, the oils from your hands, and friction, gaining a shine and a unique depth. The card slots of a wallet, the area around the buckle of a belt, and the handles of a bag are the parts that change the most.
Why does every product look different?
Leather is a natural material; grain marks, slight tonal differences, and small scratches are the signature of that piece. Even if two products are made from the same mold, they will not look the same after a year.
Accelerating the patina
- Use the product; keep it in your pocket or in your hand.
- Short periods of sunlight deepen the tone. Do not leave it out for hours.
- Condition it once a month with a colorless cream.
Slowing down the patina
Keep it away from direct sunlight, avoid prolonged contact with dark denim (it may transfer dye), and dry it immediately if it gets wet.
There is a scratch, what should I do?
For light scratches, rub them a few times with your finger; the leather's natural oils will cover the scratch. For deep scratches, use a colorless cream and a soft cloth. Most scratches become part of the patina in a few weeks.
